Increasing numbers of young adults in Australia are choosing to abstain from alcohol. Research demonstrates young adults encounter difficulties when choosing to abstain in settings where alcohol consumption is common or expected. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of abstainers aged 18–24 years to understand if the acceptance of their non-drinking practices is changing and how they managed their non-drinking practice in social contexts where alcohol consumption is common in Queensland, Australia. Drawing on the theoretical framework of symbolic interactionism, we show how drinking practices are prevalent and powerful, evident through pressure from significant others to drink. Second, we show how young adults enact agency to deal with this pressure and participate as a non-drinker through (a) having a strong sense of being, (b) using an empowered verbal response to deflect pressure and (c) choosing alternative non-alcohol-related activities. The findings offer insight into how young adults wishing to refrain from alcohol may participate openly as abstainers in heterogenous drinking groups.

AbstractSlow‐onset disasters, a neglected climatic event, affect the agricultural sector in Southeast Asia and threaten regional food security. Improving food security in slow‐onset disasters requires policy development by both regional and national governments. Despite this articulated need, very little research on the national and regional food security policies in slow‐onset disaster events has been undertaken. Focusing on Southeast Asia, this paper aims to (i) review existing policies to support food security in slow‐onset disasters; (ii) identify strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in the existing policies; (iii) explain the policy window on food security in slow‐onset disasters. An analytical framework of eight components of food security was adopted for the content analysis of 39 related policy documents collected from 11 countries in Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The study found that none of the 39 policies directly targeted improving food security in slow‐onset disasters. Existing policies to support food security in slow‐onset disasters were incorporated in the context of climate change or national target programs on green development, agricultural development, nutrition, and famine. Our analysis also revealed that existing policies primarily focus on the first two pillars of the food security framework: food availability and access, with a predominant emphasis on availability. However, the third pillar, food utilization, is often overlooked. This study recommends developing a comprehensive policy to address protracted food insecurity, particularly among vulnerable populations in areas impacted by slow‐onset disasters.

AbstractQueensland experienced relatively low case numbers during the first year of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic. This may be due to timely, stringent policies, yet there is currently no research evaluating this link, despite the state government playing such a primary role in the pandemic response. This ecological study used a cross‐sectional design to examine the stringency and timeliness of Queensland's containment policies and their impact on COVID‐19 cases in 2020. To achieve this, the authors generated a stringency index for Queensland in 2020 in line with the Oxford COVID‐19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT) method, since these data were not available at the time. The national context was also provided by examining the relationship between case numbers and policies in Australia. The findings demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between policy stringency and case numbers in both Australia and Queensland. While Australia experienced two waves of COVID‐19 in 2020, Queensland only experienced one. In terms of timeliness, there was a reactive approach to the first wave, with rapid escalation of policy stringency in both Queensland and Australia as a whole. Queensland's ability to prevent a second wave in 2020 may be due to a more systematic, gradual de‐escalation of policies and the maintenance of strategies such as interstate border controls. This study suggests that preventing the reintroduction of new cases after a period of elimination is important. Recommendations are made for the application and interpretation of the stringency index. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between de‐escalation strategies and outcomes.

Given the unprecedented circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic and increasingly uncertain socio-economic conditions, cultural practice remains a stable canvas upon which young people draw the most agency and exercise a sense of freedom. This article reports on an international research collaboration, drawing on the voices of 77 young musicians from three countries—Australia, England and Portugal—who were interviewed about their music-making practices during lockdown. Despite reporting loss of jobs and income and the social distancing restrictions placed upon the ability to make music, most young music-makers were positive about the value of having more time, to be both producers and consumers of music. At the same time, however, our data also highlight increasing forms of inequality among young music-makers. This article argues that despite short-term gains in relation to developing musical practice, the longer-term impacts of COVID-19 on the music industry will affect the sector for years to come.
